Seasons Greeting from John

As you can see from that glorious picture on the cover the leaves are falling and it’s beginning to look a bit autumnal. The heaters are in the office and arrangements are being made for Christmas festivities and the Christmas rush for goodies.

So what’s new from me you are all asking……

It looks as if we are finally starting to harness technology and one kind carer is working with me to design and publish a web site. This will provide an alternative to our Yellow Pages adverts and enable us to provide more information regarding the role of foster carers and the initial enquiry stage.

Continuing on the theme of technology I have engaged the services of a computer programmer to design an internal web based information system that can eventually be extended to carers to access publications and announcements. As its technology and they use a different language to you and I anything can happen but the intent is there.

I was asked the question yesterday how big should the company grow for it to be too big?

The answer was relatively easy, as this question was in the founder members minds from day one. It was always believed that the carer/social worker relationship was important so the company decided to limit the number of carers allocated to each social worker. This hopefully will ensure that social workers are not over burdened with excessive workloads, reducing stress and enable good working relationships with the carers. It was also decided that I would be easily accessible to staff, prospective carers and carers alike. To this end size would not matter! (he says with a smile).

Well, on that note I think I’ve written enough, so all that remains for me to say is a sincere thank to you all for your hard work and efforts in securing quality placements for looked after children.

Have a Happy Christmas

John

1st Plymouth Panel Meeting

November will see the first meeting of the Plymouth Panel-this is an exciting time for us at the office and is a clear indication of how much we have grown in the last 6 months! It will also make it much easier for our carers to attend Panel meetings. The date of the first meeting is November 21st and we have 4 carers who will have completed their assessments in time to attend this. Further meetings will be held every six weeks or so.

Birth Children's Support Group

The group met for the first time on the 25th October and I think I can safely say a good time was had by all.

The group discussed what they wanted to get out of their meetings, designed a logo which Richard T. is producing on the computer for us (well volunteered by Rhiannon) and then went out for lunch and bowling.

Would have been nice to include some photos of the event but someone forgot the camera! Duh!

The next event will be held in February, during half-term. We will let you know the exact details when they are finalised.Fundraising

Website of the Month

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UKFoster-Adopt/

This is a discussion group for people in the UK who have an interest in fostering, although it has members worldwide.

It is intended as a place for foster carers to share experiences, gain information and ask for support. If you are interested you need to sign up (it doesn’t cost anything), the other members have a wealth of experience and are more than willing to offer advice and support.

Messages can be posted to the site and they also run a weekly online chat.

Fundraising

Thanks to all those that supported us in our efforts to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

With equal parts amusement and embarrassment we dressed up in our 70’s/ABBA gear and went collecting money on Mutley Plain. The Evening Herald was also there to take our photo when we released the balloons that family and friends had sponsored.

The winner of the balloon race was James D. His balloon managed to make it all the way to…. the other end of North Hill !!!!!!!

We managed to raise over £100 on the day and John has very generously offered to match that. We expect to make this an annual event and hope that you will continue to support us.

Anti-Bullying Week 2005

During the second annual Anti-Bullying Week local events will run across England from Monday 21 to Friday 25 November. Check with local schools for specific events.

Blue Friday

The Anti-Bullying Alliance has designated the last day of Anti-Bullying Week (Friday 25th November) as Blue Friday - a non-uniform day when children, young people and adults in schools and workplaces everywhere will dress in blue to show their determination to stop bullying. It is not a fund-raising event but an awareness raising day.
