Adventures At Escot
House —
The Summer Event
It was a hot, hazy or lazy but definitely oppressive
day. The people were congregating in their masses
and I thought I was early!
The air of enthusiasm sang as the organisation
of going into the Escot
estate prevailed!
All was hinging on the last two or three families
to arrive, when a man appeared, looking as if
he was about to go on safari. He had a hat as
big as him with a feather in it - I then discovered
he was the education ranger, who had come to collect
us to venture off to the storytelling corner (our
first event!)
The scene was set: a bonfire, one bag of marshmallows,
one storyteller, several children and a few adults!
The story began. The storyteller then exploded
into animations and showed us his Didgeridoo!
(An Australian musical instrument!)
Well, we had the bonfire, but the marshmallows
were nowhere to be seen. Never mind it was picnic
time. Our fest of sandwiches, crisps, fizzy drinks,
healthy fruit and tomatoes and a spot of cake
were delivered by horse and cart........ No, ok
by a small tractor and pulley - thing. I played
the hostess and made sure everyone had their share
of the nosh!! Seconds were available and surprisingly
it seemed it was the boys that advantageously
sought the leftovers.
Plan B was to challenge the children to get
through the maze. My thinking was freedom from
the children so the adults can sunbathe. I must
point out the maze was in clear sight and could
be monitored, before any fears arise reading this
article and alarm bells ringing shouting out health
and safety, responsibility - I was just thinking
of the adults, I mean kids - honestly!
But to my surprise and disbelief, the children
did it quicker than anticipated. I was hoping
for 2 hours, but they did it in ten minutes. I
had promised the winner an ice cream, but it looked
like several ice creams were about to be bought
as I heard a chorus of ' that was easy.' Drat!
Plan C was quickly put into action. It was time
to go off and do your own thing. The bird of prey
show was soon to be upon us as was the feeding
of the otters, there were things to climb and
explore! If it wasn't a huge great estate, it
could have been a scene from 'Blott on the landscape'
as the cricket came out and I swear I spied someone
with a handkerchief on their head in knots, but
fortunately no string vest!!
To conclude, it was a quality weather day, a
top picnic and excellent company.
Thank you to all carers, children and staff
who made it a fabulous day.
Two Different Accounts of the Summer
Event By the Kids!
1) Thank you for the day out to Escot
House. My favourite part was all the food
but my mum really liked the storyteller. I thought
he was good too. This day was one of the best
days in the Summer holidays. It was really good
to see other children who are in Foster care just
like me. I hope you invite me again.
Yours sincerely, M S
2) Escot
house was a boring place but not too boring.
The maze was quite fun. The story telling was
rubbish, it was for two year olds, not for babies
they wouldn't understand!
The fizzy drinks were brilliant. So yummy and
the food was not too bad, but next time put in
crisps, chocolate, sweets and jam sandwiches -
yum yum! Now that's what I call real food. A place
like the Milky Way or Big Sheep would have been
better. Thanks for thinking of us though!
Yours sincerely, L S
My conclusion on these two accounts are kids
only think of their stomachs! The next event will
be held in a chocolate factory!
No please don't take that seriously - only kidding!
